Invitation to Submit a Paper / Poster / Film at RANZCO 2023

Thank you to everyone who submitted an abstract for consideration at RANZCO’s 54th Annual Scientific Congress, taking place in Perth, Western Australia from 20th – 23rd October 2023.

The call for abstracts is now closed.

Notifications will be sent to submitting authors on Monday 24th July.

Using the online abstract submission form you will be able to select ONE (1) of the following categories that best fits your submission. These categories will be used by the Scientific Program Committee to place abstracts in session streams and assign them to the reviewers.

Cornea
Epidemiology / Public Health
Genetics
Glaucoma
Neuro-Ophthalmology
Ocular Oncology
Oculoplastic / Orbit
Paediatric Ophthalmology
Refractive Surgery

Strabismus
Sustainability (The sustainability category is welcoming content that covers sustainability in ophthalmology. For example: managing waste after eye surgery, reducing eye clinic patient travel and improving the renewable sources of energy for an eye clinic)

The following presentation formats will be available at the RANZCO 2023 Congress.

Please note authors may indicate whether they prefer “PAPER ONLY”, “POSTER ONLY”, “PAPER OR POSTER“ and “FILM”.

For example, if you select PAPER ONLY your abstract will not be considered for POSTER and vice versa. If you wish to be considered for PAPER but are happy to be offered a Poster if not selected, then please choose “PAPER OR POSTER”. Please read the descriptions below before submitting your abstract.

Paper Presentations (In person presentation only. Pre-recorded presentations will NOT be permitted)

Rapid Fire
Most paper presentations are in a ‘Rapid Fire’ format. You will have five (5) minutes to present your paper followed by two (2) minutes for discussion (7) minutes in total. There will be two podia in the room so that there is no time wasted in changing over from one speaker to the next.

Best Paper
Six presentations will be selected in a ‘Best Paper’ format. Notification will be sent to the presenters selected for this ‘Best Paper’ session. You will have ten (10) minutes to present your paper followed by three (3) minutes for discussion.

The Gerard Crock Trophy will be awarded to the best paper presented by a RANZCO Fellow (of any year) or Scientist. The John Parr Trophy will be awarded to the best paper presented by a Trainee or student.

Poster Presentations (Hard copy and e-Posters)

Top scoring posters will be shortlisted for the Best Poster prize as awarded by a panel of judges.

Further information on the format/specifications of the posters to be advised closer to the Congress.

The Ophthalmic Film Festival

The RANZCO Congress will host the Ophthalmic Film Festival which will run continuously during the Congress. Selected films will be screened continuously in a specially designated area of the Congress.

Short abstracts of 5 to 6 lines are to be submitted online. The full film is not required at the time of submission. Further details will be provided to accepted film submitting authors.

Film abstracts submitted will be short-listed for presentation by a panel of judges. Prizes will be presented for the best films in the below categories:

  • Ophthalmic Surgery
  • Non-Surgical (E.g. research, education, community, sustainability)

Film Festival Sponsor

Submission Notes

  • Maximum of 2 films per person.
  • Notification will be sent to the submitting authors selected for the Film Festival regarding specifications and submission of the film via file transfer.

Only authors who register and pay for the Congress may take part in the paper / poster sessions and the Film Festival.

Sustainability Prize (papers/posters and films will be considered for the prize)

The sustainability category is welcoming content that covers sustainability in ophthalmology. For example:

  • managing waste after eye surgery
  • reducing eye clinic patient travel
  • improving the renewable sources of energy for an eye clinic

The sustainability prize will be judged on the merit of their contribution to more sustainable ophthalmology in Australia and New Zealand.

Each abstract will undergo an identity hidden review by three (or more) reviewers from the Scientific Program Committee.

Abstracts will be reviewed using the below criteria:

Only a certain number of abstracts are selected for inclusion in the program. While we understand that it can be disappointing to miss out, the aim is to provide the most comprehensive and diverse program possible. Decisions of the committee are final.

Abstract submission closes: Monday 15th May 2023 11:59pm AEST (*Late abstracts will NOT be accepted).

Notification to authors: Monday 24th July 2023.
